Each unit plan consists of an overview, essential questions, texts, products, notes and unit specific resources. All units are aligned to the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts. Click on each unit for details. |
- Unit 1: Who Am I? - Try your hand at new concepts and literary techniques using a rather familiar subject. In this unit students will explore narrative texts and create narratives of their own.
- Unit 2: Changing - In this unit, students will look at the way authors develop characters over the course of a text and dive into in/direct characterization, character types, and the purpose of such characters.
- Unit 3: Fitting In...Standing Out - Both are important, and both require finesse. Students will examine culture and context in dramatic readings, poetry, and film about the ways in which people either fit into or stand apart from their societies.
- Unit 4: Who Will I Become? - Students will examine current and historic texts to gain explore social context. Students will also conduct research in an attempt to define what it means to be...whoever they want to be, wherever they want to be it.
- Research Project - Students will formulate a question and conduct research to answer that question. Students will also create a website and an annotated bibliography for this assignment.
